Sewing & Quilting

Teaching the skills while making quilts for our Vets & others.

We've made all kinds of quilts.

Here's a helpful ministry that teaches sewing and quilting skills to Jackson residents. Many quilts are given away each year to our vets and others in need.

FROM AN INTERVIEW WITH WENDY:
"My mother was a quilter and that's one of the things that I know how to do. The Lord said to me, do all that you can with all that you have, and don't worry about what you don't have.

And so we share quilts freely with anybody who's cold, baby quilts through the baby pantry and the toy store. It's one of the gifts that parents can choose for their children. So we can spend a lot of time making beautiful quilts to give away.

And so we teach people how to sew and put quilts together, and about four times a year, we have tie parties where we gather a group of 10 ladies together and we can tie up to 100 quilts in a three day event.

But our number, when we finished was really a lot closer to 2,000 quilts that we'd made and given to veterans. So if 2,000 to veterans, what's the total number to everybody? I have no idea. We didn't keep track, but. We would be more like 5,000? Oh, yeah, easy. 5,000 quilts.

It's not just me. It's not one person sewing it's the ladies from the Quilt Guild and it's several church ladies that come.  Like just last week, a grandma decided that she was done sewing. And so they brought 18 jumbo totes full from her quilt room and donated them to us.

As we're going through things, there were three king size quilts that were just ready to finish, to tie to bind and give away. There was also another tote full of quilt blocks.

So the ladies put together. I think, 15 quilts out of the pieces that she'd started. So I don't get to really start a lot in our ministry. I'm the finisher. I just get to make sure they all get done.

But it's so interesting. I didn't know the numbers were that high. So that many people are being blessed with warm blankets.

Well, in this, we've been doing this since 2004 and before that, and we learned how to strip quilt. So the things that took my mother two weeks to make, we can make in one day.

And we've taught the other ladies how to strip quilt. It's a technique you use instead of using a pair of scissors and cutting each block out like my mother would have. It looks like a pizza cutter, and you just slice big pieces in.

OUR MEETING TIMES:
Yeah, so at least one day a week, most of the year, we quilt on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And then when the toy store goes live, we move it just to Mondays. So October, November, December, we're just Mondays at Wilkins Street quilting and the rest of the year we're Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Always call first before to confirm meeting times. Please call 517-740-8444.

It's really an honor to get to show love in this way. My mom, quilted, She made quilts for everybody that was in our church when they graduated or got married. At her funeral, there were so many people that stood up and said things like, 'I still have Mrs. Max's quilt'. It was really sweet.

Sometimes I know God's presence in my life is like a blanket of His presence. So as we make these quilts for people, we pray for them. I'm praying that that God would just cover people with his presence and that these quilts can be representation of that.

God is awesome and a quilt is just one of the ways that we have found that we can show love in Jesus name."
